Dr. A. G. Elder
90 On Sunday
No formal celebration is be-
ing planned for the 90th birth-
day of Deport’s veteran physi-
cian, Dr. A. G. Elder. He will
reach the four score and ten
mark on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Dr. Arthur Gilbert Elder, a
practicing physician for 63 years
with 47 of those years in Deport
and surrounding area, is a na-
tive of Red River County. Son
of the late R. J. and Sally Elder,
he was bom at Clarksville on
Sept. 21, 1879.
He became city health officer
in Deport in 1923, a post he has
held since his appointment. He
still does a limited practice at his
office located in his home in De-
port.
Fox hunting has been his fav-
orite sport and he is looking for-
ward to attending the Texas Fox
and Wolf Hunters State meet to
t>e held at Camp Tonkaya, near
Garrison, in October, which will
be his 51st year without missing
the annual event.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon McCon-
nell of Stevens, Ark., visited Mr.
and Mrs. Jeff Ewing Saturday
evening and were Sunday dinner
guests of Mr. ad Mrs. A. G. Nor-
wood.
Week end guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Troy Lewis were their chil-
dren, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Black-
burn and son of Blossom. Mr.
and Mrs. Cato Jones and chil-
dren of Somerville. N. J., Mrs.
ohnny Lilley and Janay of Cle-
burne and Miss Hrenda Lewis of
Dallas.

Wedding, Aug. 30
Miss Rita Mauldin became the
bride of Lawrence Malone in a
formal ceremony at home of the
bridegroom’s parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Clarence Malone at Paris.
Rev. Devarl Archer heard the
couple repeat double-ring mar-
riage vows at 7 o’clock Saturday
evening, Aug. 30.
Mr. and Mrs. David R. Mauldin
of Cuthand, are parents of the
bride.
The bride wore a white satin
gown covered with lace. The new
bride is a freshman at Paris J un-
ion College. Her husband is
employed at Campbell Soup Co.

Twenty people were in attend-
ance und were served cake and
coffee. The wedding cake was
white with pink and blue roses.

Gunners Mate 3C Charles M.
Lewis, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert M. Lewis of Talco, is
serving aboard the USS Kitty
Hawk, an attack aircraft carrier,
which just completed an eight
month deployment to Vietnam.
The Kitty Hawk, which was the
first ship to receive a Pre-iden-

Home From Army
Sgt. Bobby G. Brown is at
home after two years in the Ar-
my. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene Brown. He entered
the Army Sept. 4. 1967, took hia
basic training at Ft. Polk, La.,
and received his diploma in chem-
ical at the United States Army
Chemical Center and School at
Fort McClellan, Ala.
He spent a year in Vietnam
with the 9th Inf. Div., known as
the Old Reliables at Dong Tom,
as a driver of an armored per-
sonnel carrier in the Flame Pit.

He received the National De-
fense Service Medal, Army Com-
mendation Medal, Purple Heart,
Vietnam Service Medal, w/3
Bronze Service Stars, Expert
(Rifle), Republic of Vietnam
Campaign Medal, Vietnamese
Presidential Unit Citation, and
the Good Conduct Medal.
After returning to the States
he was stationed at Fort Hood,
where he was discharged Sept. 12.
Deadline Nears
Christmas Bags
Time is drawing near for the
Vietnam Christmas bags to be
turned in. Those who are filling
the ditty bags and have not re-
turned them are urged to do so
within the next few days. Oct.
1st is the day for Lamar County
Red Cross Chapter in Paris to
receive them.
The project has been well re-
ceived again this year by people
and organizations in this area.
Gift items will be placed in the
usual plastic bags but will be
shipped ill gay Christmas red
drawstring bags. Service men
appreciate the gifts and even
more the thoughtfulness of the

turned home Saturday from Pas-
adena after a weeks visit these

Young People Net
$48 At Benefit
Young People’s Night at Riv-
ers Cafe was well attended Fri-
day night. An enjoyable evening
was spent with dancing and mu-
sic. The band was back and fur-
nished music for the party.
The admission fee of $1.00 per
person netted $48 for the Donny
Howland fund. All young people
in the area are invited to attend
Young People’s Night each Fri-
day evening from 7 o’clock t»
curfew.
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Fry re-
turned home Sunday after a three
weeks vacation in Rockford, IIL,
with Mrs. Fry’s mother, Mrs. A.
F. Yates. Mr. Fry also visited
in Dayton, Ohio, with Bill Cor-
beans.
Mrs. Ruby Cogburn spent the
week end in Garland visiting her
daughter. Mrs. Bud Hanks, Mr.
