now at your Chevrolet dealers,
Th* Candidates for Governor this year are, in most instances, above
average in qualification! for the Office of Governor. However,
Preston Smith, with si* years In th* House of Representatives, six
years as a State Senator and six years as Lieutenant Governor and
Presiding Officer of State Senate, has th* most experience wdth, and
th* knowledge of, Texas Government. He knows the needs and prob-
lems of Texas.
Preston Smith was bom in Williamson County, near Georgetown, 55
yeon ago. He was seventh of a family of 13 children. The family
later moved to West Texas, where Preston worked his way through
high school at Lamesa, and through college aftexos Tech, Lubbock.
It was perhaps here In thl» West Texas College that he first saw th#
need of more money for the building and operation of the StoteCol-
leges, outside of th# Texas University and Texas A6M System, later
In the Legislature in 1947 this became his first political activity,
culminating in his third term in the House with th* passage of a bill
levying a state tax for this purpose, the money from which in th*
last 20 years has built many buildings and greatly improved college
education outside of the Texas University and A&M Systems.
Preston Smith and I served together in the Texas House of Represent-
atives in 1945 and 1947 (49th and 50th Legislatures). Through th#
yean since, 1 have seen him occasionally, followed his Politico!
Career in th# newspapers and supported him in his State Campaigns.

Preston Smith once, while discussing o water board meeting with my
son, Joe Moore Jr., probably gov* hie philosophy of life and Gov-
ernment, when he said, "Life would be simpler ond pleasanter if
there were fewer selfish people." Is this not true of all human ef-
fort? W# os individuals ore all gultty, more or lets.,of this fault, In
that we oak too‘much for what w# da for others ond seek to give too
little for whaPothen do for us.
With these observations, may I again recommend Lieut. Gov. Pres-
ton Smith to you for Governor of Texas. I believe that a vote for
Preston Smith is a vote for good government for Texas.
RESPECTFULLY.
