“Beyond The Aspen Grove,”
by Ann / winger .. Forty acres
of land In the Colorado Hoc kies
are Ann /winger’s subject In
prose and drawing. There,
8,300 feet above sea level, sum-
mer Is short and winter long
and often harsh. It Is a land
the /wingers have lovingly ex-
plored and recorded, careful not
to disrupt the balance of die
land, the relationship of plant
to animal and of each to Its
environment.
The forty acres, < ailed Con-
stant Friendship after the
Maryland land Iter ancestor set-
tled In the early 1700’s, Is a
“place of all seasons, for even
In winter there Is a promise
of spring, and in spring the
foretaste of summer. The
vhite snow becomes the white
of summer clouds, the resonant
green of spruce becomes the
green head of drake mallard
.....here part of each season
Is contained In each other.”
Mrs. /winger has looked at
the land and Its Inhabitants
witti an artist’s eye. She has
learned to appreciate the
scientific as well as esthetic
relationships of life in this
land, and she has learned how
needful to man Is the preserva-
tion of the wilderness.
"Beyond (lie Aspen Grove”
tells, In beautiful and simple
language and drawings, of mea-
dow, lake, marsh and forest,
of algae and dragonflies, of
deer and jays that live In the
clear thin, air of the mountain
world.
LIGHT SKINS [IEWAKE SUN
Skin cancer occur* most ofter
light skinned people, and on the
exposed surfaces of the body.
The American Canc er Society
says: watch for any unusual
lump, bump, pimple, ulcer, or
hard spot of skin that doesn’t
go away In two weeks. After
that--see your doctor!
Lawson Attends
Prosecutors
Short Course
County attorney Marlon
Lawson Is In San Antonio thlr
week attending a Prosecutors
Short Course, sponsored by the
Texas District and County At-
torneys Association. He Is ac-
companied by Mrs. Lawson.
Lawson registered Sunday
afternoon, and will attend
sessions every day running
through Friday afternoon.
These sessions are being held
at St. Mary’s University. All
the subjects are very practical,
being designed to help the
prosecutor do a better Job.
Some of the. subjects are: Ar-
rest, Search and Seizure, Grand
Jury and Examining Trials,
Examination and Impeachment
of Witnesses, Narcotic Cases,
DWI Cases, Discovery ant
Depositions, Jury Selection,
Confessions, and Probation Re-
vocations.
Speakers Include Judge Leon
Douglas, Court of Criminal Ap-
peals; William Chan, district
attorney, Nassau County, New
York; George Van Hoomissen,
dean, National College of
District Attorneys; James
Zagle, assistant attorney
general, Illinois; and several
district attorneys of Texas
along with other experts.
This short course was
designed and Is being held to
help the prosecutor cope with
the Increasing complexities. Of
his job. Many decisions of the'
Supreme Court of the United
States have added new problems
in law enforcement. Since
these decisions are not always
unanimous with the Justices of
the Supreme Court, It can be
seen how the local prosecutor
and the sheriff’s department
might t>e perplexed In many
Instances.
