“Certainly,** I replied, meeting her
eyes, and noting a quiver of the lips
that was eloquent of deep fueling and
loyalty. She continued silent as we
marched on and I felt that there was
the least deflance In her air; then abe
drew a handkerchief from her sleeve,
touched It lightly to her eyes, and
untied.
“I bad not thought of quite follow-
ing you home! Here Is Glenarm gate
—and there He your battlements and
towers.”
"Rather they belong to my old
friend, John Glenarm. In hla goodness
of heart he gave me the use of the
place for the summer; and as gener-
osity with another’s property Is very
easy, I hereby tender you our fleet—
canoes, boats, steam launch—and the
stable, which contains a variety of
traps and a good riding-horse or two.
They are all at your service. 1 hope
that you and your aunt will not fall to
avail yourselves of each and all. Do
you ride? y was specially charged to
give the horses exercise.”
"Thank you very much,” she said.
“When we are well settled, and feel
more secure, we shall be glad to call
on you. Father Stoddard certainly
served us well In sending us to you,
Mr. Donovan.”
In a moment she spoke again, quits
alowly, and with, I thought, a very
pretty emhafrassinent.
“Aunt Pat may have spoken of an-
other difficulty—a mere annoyance,
really,” and she smiled at me gravely.
"Oh, yes; of the youngster who has
been troubling you. Your father and
he have, of course, no connection?"
"No; decidedly not. But he la a
very offensive person, Mr. Donovan.
It would be a matter of great distress
if he should pursue us to this place.”
"It Is Inconceivable that a gentle-
man—If he Ik'* a gentleman—should
follow you merely for the purpose of
annoying you. I have heard that young
ladles usually know how to get rid of
importunate suitors.”
”1 have heard that they have
that reputation,” she laughed back.
“But Mr. Gillespie—"
“That’s the name. Is It? Your aunt
did no’ mention It.”
"Yes; he lives quite near us at
Stamford. Aunt Pat disliked his fa-
ther before him, and now that he Is
dead she visits her displeasure on the
son; but she Is quite right about It
He la a singularly unattractive and
uninteresting person, and I trust that
he will not find us.”
"That Is quite unlikely. You will
do well to forget all about him—
forget all your troubles and enjoy the
beauty of these June days.”
We had reached Glenarm gate, and
8t.,Agatha’s was now hidden by the
foliage along the winding path. Helen
threw away the bits of twig when we
came to the wall, and, as 1 swung the
gate open, paused mockingly with
clasped hands and peeped Inside.
"1 must go back,” abe said. Then,
her manner changing, she dropped her
hands at her side and faced me.
"You will warn me, Mr. Donovan,
of the first approach of troubie. I
wish to save my aunt In every way
possible— she means so much to me;
she has made life easy for me where
It would have been hard.”
*’ "There will be no trouble. Miss Hol-
brook. You are as safe as though you
i ire hidden In a cave In the Apen-
nines; but I shall give you warning
at the first sign of danger.”
My father is—Is quite relentless,”
ahe murmured, averting her eyes.
I turned to retrace the path with
her; but she forbade me and was gone
swiftly—a flash of white through the
trees—before I oould parley with her.
I stared after her as long as I could
hear her light tread In the path. And
when she had vanished a fueling of
loneliness possessed me and the coun-
try quiet mocked me with Its peso*.
I clanged the Glenarm gates to-
gether sharply and went In to dinner;
but I pondered long as I smoked on
the star hung terrace. There was no
disguising the truth that the coming
of the Holbrooks had got on my
nerves—at least that was my phrase
for it. Now that I thought of It, they
were Impudent Intruders and Paul
Stoddard hnd gone too far In turning
them ov?r to me. There was noth’ll'

severely alone. But even as these
thoughts ran through my mind I
turned toward St Agatha's, whose
lights were vli-tble through the trees,
aad I knew that there was nothing
honest In my lmpatlsoce. Helen Hol-
brook's eyes were upon me and her
votoe called from the dark; and when
the clock chimed nine Id the tower
beyond the wall memory brought back
the graceful turn of her dark head,
the firm curve of her throat as shs
had Hateasd to the mellow fling of the
bell*
Sobered by these reflections, 1 left
the terrace shortly after 11 and walked
through the strip of wood that lay
hetwsea the house and the lake to the
Ql—arm pter; and at once matters
task a turn that put ths love of wom-
an quite out of the reckoning.

” DEAD
We often see or bear these dis-
tressing words as they follow
eaoh other in rapid succession.
It happens sometimes despite all
human effort b ut it happens
thousands of times for no other
reason than that those who have
the care and treatment of the
sick do not seek the right place
for the right medicine. We
Htrive to give the sick the very
best and the purest medicine
that la purchasable. It may
seem high sometimes, but the
best that can be had is never too
good nor to high for the cBnsci
entious Doctor, the conscientious
Druggist or for the sick man or
woman. They want the best
medicine while there is a chance
to get well and live-Tf people
neglect the important duty of
procuring the right medicine at
the right time and from the right
place the consequences may be-
come serious beyond help or
hope. Know yo u r Druggist

pensing with care ability and

need mention this affair to no ona.”
“Very good, sir.”
He touched his hat respectfully.
“I have business with this person.
Say nothing to the ladles at St. Aga-
tha’s about him.”
He saluted and departed; and with
Gillespie walking beside me I started
for the boat-landing.
He had wrapped a handkerchief
•bout one arm and I gave him my
own tor the other. His right arm was
bleeding freely below the elbow and
I tied It up for him.
"That jump deserved better luck,"
1 volunteered, as he accepted my aid
In silence.
“I'm proud to have you Ilka It. Will

"I don’t holly care for It," be ob-

not sure that I'm going to grow fond
of you. What’e your business with
me, anyhow?”
"My' business, Mr. Gillespie, la to
tee that you leave this lake by the
first and fastest train.”
‘Is It possible T" he drawled, mock-
ingly.
"More than that,” I replied In hie
own key; "It Is decidedly probable.’*
“Meanwhile, It would be diverting
to know where you’re taking me. I
thought the other chap was the con-
stable.”
“I’m taking you to the house of a
friend where I'm visiting. I'm going
to row you In your boat. It's only n
short dlstsnee; and when we get there
I shall have something to say to you.”
Hs made no reply, but got Into the
boat without ado. I turned over In my
mind the few Items of Information
that I had gained from Mias Pat and
her niece touching the young man
who was now my prisoner, and found
that I knew little enough about him.
He was the unwelcome and annoying
•ultor of Mlsa Helen Holbrook, nad
I hnd caught him prowling about St.
Agatha’s In a manner that was Inde-
fensible.
Hs sat huddled In ths stern, nursing
hie swathed arms on hla kneea and
whistling dolefully. The lake was a
broad pool of silver. Save for the
soft splash of IJIma’s paddle behind
me and the sllyb* wash of water on
the near shore, .uence possessed the
world. Gillespie looked shout with
some curiosity, but said nothing, nad
when 1 drove the boat to the qienarm
landing he crawled out aad followed
me through the wood without n word.
