Cooper
High School Choir
Sings Cantata As
Holy Week Begins
Mrs. Kermit Cerrington, super-1
' visor of music in Cooper public
' schools, directed the high school
I choir of 60 voices in an Easter
musicale Sunday afternoon at the
high school auditorium. More
I than 500 persons heard the choir
| sing the cantata "The Easter
Song” (Fred B. Holton) as its I
contribution to the observance to
Holy Week.
Barbara Judy Martin, accom-1
panist , opened the program with I
j a piano prelude, and the choir
sang "The Holy City” (S. Adams), j
I with Jeanette Castleberry, Betty
' West and Tommie Kant as a
j soprano ensemble singing the solo
part Kenneth Crumbley said
prayer, and the first number in
the cantata "The City Lies In)
! Shadow” was sung by the choir. I
"O Ye of Little Faith" was the |
second cantata number, in which J
i Betty West. Jeanette Castleberry,)
I Tommie Kant. Jean Ann Carrell, j
Laralnel Baker and Brenda Cain I
sang as «a group the soprano part. |
I Carol Sue Bolger was accom-
\ panist for the number.
I One of the highpoints In the
J program was the choir’s rendition
| of the widely loved anthem “God
So Loved the World," from "The
Crucifixion”, by Stainer, which
emphasizes the appreciation of
' Christianity for Christ’s sacrifice
on the cross. Bennett Jeter, high
school principal, read the Easter
story from the Scriptures follow-
! ing the anthem.
"With Healing In His Wings"
I was the title of a number sung
by a mixed sextet composed of |
| Olen Janes, Jr., Paul D. Miller,
Marion Roy McClain, Dora Posey,
Tommie Kant and Betty West.
Girls of the choir sang “Who
Shall Roll Away the Stone.”
Other numbers offered in the can-
tata were "At the Rising of the I
Sun", "Christ Arose”. "Halle-'
luajh" and "The Easter Song”,
the grand finale.
Paul D. Miller said the bene-
diction and the large crowd, im- j
pressed with the old, old story
of Christ's death on the cross and
the glory of His resurrection, as
portrayed by the young singers,
passed quietly out of the audi-
torium.
