Queen's Voice in a Phonograph.
Sir John Harrington, who hai
been made minister plenipotentia-
ry from King Edward’s court to
rhat of Mer.elik of Abyssinia, was
.tp(H>inted British agent at Abys-
finia in iRy8. He has done many
'hingx to establish cordial relations
between the two countries. One of
Sir John's great achievements was
to persuade her late majesty to
speak into a phonograph a message
to Alenelik and his empress. It
was the only time she ever consent-
ed to such experiment, and it was
done then on the express under-
standing that when the message
had once hem spoken the record
should be-deriroved. Alenelik was
so excited when he heard the great
queen's message in her own voice
that he repeatedly stopped the ma-
chine in order to have a salute
fired awl his empress was so nat-
tered to hear her own name mm-
toiued that she called out her body-
guard as a mark of rerpect.

Proverbs
" When the butter won’t
come put a penny in the
churn," is an old time dairy
proverb. It often seems to
work though no one has ever
told why.
When mothers are worried
because the children do not
gain strength and flesh we
say give them Scott’s Emul-
sion.
It is like the penny in the
milk because it works and
because there is something
astonishing about it.
Scott’s Emulsion is simply
a milk of pure cod liver oil
with some hypophosphites
especially prepared for delicate
stomachs.
Children take to it naturally
because they like the taste
and the remedy takes just as
naturally to the children be-
cause it is so perfectly adapted
to their wants.
For all weak and pale and
thin children Scott’s Emulsion
is the most satisfactory treat-
ment.

Why General Grant Smoked.
At a sort of campfire in New
York tlie other evening, when the
Eleventh Army Corps Association
got together to swap army yarns,
and pi.i’.ixh a whole lot of good
things to eat and drink, a story
was told by General James Grant
Wilson as to how General Grant be-
came an inveterate smoker. It
seems that after the fight at Fort
Donaldson, the Northern newspa-
pers circulate the story that Gen.
Grant maneuvered the whole fight
chewing at the end of an unlighted
cigar. Until thefi Grant wa3 an
extremely moderate smoker, but
people of the North, Ix-licving he
was fond of smoking, began to
send him cigars. They arrived at
camp in boxes, packages and whole-
sale quantities, until General Grant
had thousands upon thousands. He
didn’t care to give them away, and
lie couldn’t return them, so lie start-
*d iri to see what he could do to-
.v-ard diminishing the supply by
smoking. Thus he got the habit.

Financier and Mirthmaker.
American financiers who, when
in London, have had occasiop to
meet the urbane, yet extremely bus-
inesslike secretary of the Bank of
England, were surprised to learn
the other day that in his leisure he
wrote stories that fairly bubbled
over with the spirit of childhood.
Between Mr. K. Grahame, impor-
tant factor in the management of
"The Old Lady of Threadneedle
Street,'’ and Kenneth Grahame
author of "The Golden Age,” Arid
"Dream Days,” there would seen;
to he the wide gulf existing be-
tween poet and hanker—always ex-
cepting my old friend, Edmund
Clarence Stedman. If the attempt
of a lunatic to assassinate the hank
secretary had not drawn wide at-
tention to that financial factotum,
with consequent publication of hn
Diography, the fact that mirthma-
ker and money handler were one
person would have been known on-
ly to a chosen few.
