Why Not Smile?

smile? History tells us of rnen
who trained themselves not to
smile, because they wanted a
stern expressipn of countenance,
l’he savages also prided them-
selves on not showing any sort
ot'emotion. Have "you noticed
in the photographs, that the
mothers of the war heroes of
Europe are not smiling? Neither
are the generals who are doing"
the killing. Only the heroes
themselves are smiling. A hard
and stern expression does not in-
dicate a good heart nor a clear
conscience. A thief seldom
smiles. The woman of the
streets smiles with her lips, but
her eves are hard and cold. The
poverty stricken man 'on the
street who begs for a djme,
sends'his plea direct to your
by a smile. Only, the failures of
life never smile. A’’Smile is "the

was once an enlisted man.
I was asked to write a short
article on my experiences in the
Navy. I have not done so, be-
cause my experiences in the ser-
vice have been no different frorti i
tho*se of thousands of other I
young men in the Navv. You I
have all read biographies of sail/ |
ors and they are all about the
same. What I have written, I'
wrote because I*felt that the en-
listed man has been unjustly
criticised, and that some very
untrue statements have been
made in regard to the lives and
characters of the sailors in gen-
eral. Those untrue statements
in regard to the enlisted man are-
true in rare cases, but not trij^
when taking the men as a whole!
There is a better class of men-
enlisting* every day. And the
moral standard of thfe eniisteS
