Van, Kaufman matchup
much closer than expected
VAN ZANVT NEWS,

Leonard Timers keep Indian
boys and girls without a win
VAN On paper, the
District 12AAA boys game
between the Van Vandals
and the Kaufman Lions,
Tuesday. January 10, ap-
peared to be a mismatch.
Entering the game, the
Vandals had registered on-
ly three victories while the
Lions, defending district
champions, began district
play this season with two
impressive victories.
However, the Vandals
proved that all basketball
games are played on the
court and not on paper as
they put a scare into the
Lions before falling short
at the end, 63-54, in Van.
Wayne Horton burned
the nets for 20 points as he
led the Vandals in scoring.
He was followed by Keith
Kindle with 12, Nickey
Crow with eight, and Terry
Edwards and Cedric
Manley with seven points
each.
Van trailed 18-15 after
the first quarter before
rallying to take a surprising
30-26 lead at halftime.
The Vandals lost their lead
in the third quarter but
stayed close, 45-42,
heading into the final
quarter.
Despite losing, Van
coach Jimmy Parish said he
was pleased with the team's
performance.
"It was a very satisfying
game and it was our best
overall effort of the
season," he said. "We shot
43 percent from the field
and we made only 11 tur-
novers. We played awfully
well.”
Parish recognized Kin-
dle and Horton’s fine
shooting in the game as
they connected for 12 out
of 23 shots from the field.
The Van coach said that
Kaufman is a solid club
that rebounds and shoots
well.
"Terry Edwards had his
best game of the season
and Nickey Crow has
become a real solid per-
former for us,” added
Parish.
Against Mabank, Fri-
day, January 6, the Van-
dals fell way behind early
and were unable to come
all the way back as
Mabank prevailed. 66-59,
in Mabank.
The Vandals grabbed a
14-10 advantage after the
first quarter but were
outscored, 25-6, in the se
cond quarter to trail 35-20
at halftime. Van put on an
impressive third quarter
display as they closed the
gap to 45-42 going into the
fourth quarter.
Horton led the Vandals
in scoring with 14, follow-
ed by Patrick McFarlin
with 11, Johnny Vance
with six, four points each
from Tommy Bailiff,
Manley, Kim Moore, Kin-
dle, and Brent Hill, and
Terry Edwards with two.
An effective full-court
press was the key to the se-
cond half comeback, ac-
cording to Parish.
"We shot 53 percent in
the second half and only 22
percent in the first half,”
he pointed out. “After we
put in the press, we got
better shots in the second
half. It changed the tempo
of the game.”
Horton, Hill, Manley,
and Kindle were recogniz-
ed for fine performances in
the game by Parish.
“We lost 16-6 at the free
throw line, ' added Parish.
In what coach Johnny
Fowler called the team's
"most solid game of the
season," the Van Dolls
defeated Kaufman, 58 50,
Tuesday, January 10, to
improve their District
12AAA record to 3-2.
Jacque Roberts blistered
the nets for 26 points to
lead all scorers in the con-
test.
Roberts was followed by
Barbara Johnson and
Tameko Friend with 10
points each, Vanessa Car-
rell with five, Shelly Mars
with four, Sabrina
Ashworth with two, and
Tammy Beggs with one
point.
The Dolls led
throughout the contest as
they held leads of 12-6
after the first quarter,
27-17 at halftime, and
41-29 after three quarters.
Fowler said he was pleas-
ed with the Dolls execution
against Kaufman's full-
court press.
“We had only seven tur-
novers against the press,"
he pointed out. "We
played extremely well."
Some “silly mistakes"
kept Van from making the
game a one-sided contest.
“We played good
defense for three
quarters,” said Fowler.
“Both of our guards were
in foul trouble."
Fowler said he was pleas
ed with the play off the
bench from Mars and
Friend, along with the
board play of Johnson, who
grabbed 10 rebounds.
Against Mabank Friday,
January 6, the Dolls made
a furious comeback that
fell short at the end, 44 35,
in Mabank.
Roberts led the Dolls in
scoring with 14 points,
followed by Friend with
seven, Beggs with six,
Ashworth with four,
Johnson with two, and one
point each from Carrell

and Donna Nauert.
Van fell behind 11-6
after the first quarter, 19-9
at halftime, and 31-23
after three quarters.
Free throws were the big
difference in the game as
Mabank made 77 percent
of their attempts, accor-
ding to Fowler.
"We outscored them by
three field goals but we lost
the game at the free-throw
line,” he said. "Mabank is
a quick team and well-
coached.”
The Dolls pulled to
within three points of the
lead in the fourth quarter
but got no closer.
"It took us a half to get
started," said Fowler. "We
did not play well. Our
shooting was less than 30
percent for the game. We
limited Mabank to only 10
field goals. "
Van's boys and girls var-
sity teams will host
Mincola, Tuesday, January
17, before traveling to
Canton, Friday, January
20. The girls games will
begin at 6 p.m., followed
by the boys contests.

GRAND SALINE -
The Leonard Tigers kept
the Grand Saline Indian
boys and girls teams
winless in District 17AA
competition Friday night.
January 6, as they took
both of the evening's varsi
ty contests.
The Tigers had to rely
on their accuracy at the
free-throw line to escape
with a 55-53 win. The
Tigers hit 25 of 38 at-
tempts from the charity
stripe, but the Indians hit
just seven of 22 attempts.
Despite that, the game
was a tight defensive mat-
chup, with the teams tied
at 21-21 at halftime and
49-49 with about three
minutes to play. *
Hobbs Allison led the
Grand Saline boys with 18
points, as they slipped to
0-5 in district competition.
Earlier, the Leonard
girls took a narrow 31-29
win over the Lady Indians.
The Lady Tigers opened
an eight point lead in the
second quarter, but hung
on for a two-point win
after the Grand Saline girls
were able to come back in
the third quarter.
Angela Phillips led the
Grand Saline girls with 12
points, while Kathy
Buchanan led Leonard
with eight points.
