Jackets finish 1-3 in tourney trade bats
for boxing gloves in brawl with HSU
by CLIF THORNTON
Yellow Jacket Staff Writer
The Howard Payne Yellow
Jackets began this fall using shov-
els and rakes to prepare the new
Held for the upcoming season. On
Thursday they broke out the bats
and gloves to start the 1995 cam-
paign in the inaugural HPU Base-
ball Classic. On Saturday none of
the aforementioned items would
have helped their cause.
As it turned out boxing gloves
and mouthpieces would have
been more appropriate.
Although the Jackets' first
baseball classic was held this
weekend a completed one is still
yet to be recorded in the history
books as Saturday's first game
between HPU and Hardin-
Simmons was canceled due to a
bench-clearing brawl between the
two clubs. The remainder of the
Classic's games were canceled
because of undesirable weather.
The altercation was the latest
in a string of controversial events
over the last few seasons between
the now seemingly bitter rivals.
This one however was by far the
most severe.

Even though Howard Payne
University's soccer team's popu-
larity has not been great in the
past its lulurc is looking very
good.
"There has been a soccer team
at HPU for several years now."
said Patrick Clcvcngcr. senior
team member "but we have been
an ollicial club team for three
years."
The soccer team which is
sponsored by HPU but is not cur-
rently a part of the TIAA confer-
ence has had short seasons in the
past. Their schedule usually con-
sisted of a few club teams and an
occasional game against
Brownwood High School.
"It has been difficult to play
soccer because it has been un-or-ganied"
Clcvcngcr said. "It is
good to sec that it now has a set
direction."
Beckham fouled a bunt attempt
down Uie first baseline. As he be-
gan to run toward first base. HSU
first baseman James Bostick who
was in pursuit of the ball collided
with Beckham. Tempers flared
somewhat after this incident but
boiled over one pitch later when
Beckham was hit in the back by
the pitch and the benches cleared.
The brawl ensued between home
plate and first base and lasted for
about live minutes. After order
was restored and the teams re-
turned to their respective dugouts
the umpires canceled the remain-
der of the game and the tourna-
ment. "When officials end an athletic
contest because of bench-clearing
altercations it is a sad day in-
deed." said HPU President Dr.
Don Newbury. "There arc no win-
ners only losers. TV. . .has turned
many athletic contests into wars."
What adds fuel to the incident
is that this was the first of seven
scheduled meetings between HPU
and HSU this season with the
next 6 being in conference play.
"Regardless of who started it.
I'm disappointed that the whole
thing happened" HPU Athletic
Director Dr. Larry Nickcll said. "I
In the past the soccer team
went through the season without
a lull lime coach. They were usu-
ally led by a student coach who
played on the team This year
however coach Bob Renlrow was
the official coach ol the soccer
team. Dr. Larry Nickel athletic
director along with Renlrow are
already working to get the soccer
program ready for next year.
"Next year the soccer team
will still be considered a club
team but it will be enhanced"
Nickel said.
By improving the team and
working hard to advance the pro-
gram HPU soccer is one step
closer to becoming a member of
the TIAA conference.
"By dedicating support and
preparing a budget and schedule
for the soccer team we should be
part of the TIAA conference by
1996 or 1997" Nickel said.
Nickel also staled that with HPU
apologic to the university for the
incident. We're doing everything
in our power to handle the situa-
tion the way it should be handled
and make sure that it doesn't hap-
pen again."
At press time no punishments
or suspensions had been levied
against any member of the Yellow
Jacket team and according lo Dr.
Nickcll. if any punishments arc to
be made they will be made "after
we get all of the facts and every
party involved (coaches umpires
etc.) has been contacted to discuss
the situation."
Head coach Mike Kcnnemer
said he feels that through all that
has happened something positive
can still come out of it.
"As sorry and upset as I am
about the whole situation I think
that we can take something good
away from it" Kcnnemer said.
"Hopefully our team will become
a closer group through this."
As far as the games in the tour-
nament were concerned the Jack-
ets came out of the tournament
with a 1-3 record. On Thursday
they lost to No. 1 ranked Dallas
Baptist 7-3 and lost to Abilene
Christian 6-2. In Friday's first
game the Jackets rallied from a
