Lady Jackets defeat HSU
move to first in conference
by JASON PETTY
Yellow Jacket Stuff Writer
Although the Howard Payne
University women's basketball
team defeated Hardin-Simmons
and moved into first place in the
conference it has been business
as usual for the Jackets as they
hope to finish up the regular sea-
son strong.
"Our season is far from over"
first year head coach Steve
Knickerbocker said. "After the
win the players were excited and
wanted to do some things we don't
normally do things like going to
the film. We have been trying to
approach it from the angle of this
being a big win. Wc enjoyed it for
the moment but now wc have to
move on."
The Lady Jackets put their fate
into their own hands by defeating
HSU Saturday. If they win their
remaining conference games they
will become the 1995 TIAA
Champions.
"I didn't know what to expect
at the beginning of the season."
Knickerbocker said. " These girls
never give up. You can't teach that
and I'm obviously very proud of
Ready set shoot!
their clfort."
Knickerbocker pointed out that
this is only the second game that
his team has won alter being down
at halftimc.
As the Jackets enter the final
games of their regular season
Knickerbocker said he will con-
tinue to stress defense and that his
team's defense is the reason that
they arc in their current position.
"We've come a long way"
Knickerbocker said. "We still
aren't shooting the ball very well
but our defense has pulled us
through."
The Lady Jackets play two of
their last four conference games
on the road and the ability to win
those games on the road will be
vital according to Knickerbocker.
"The conference title will be
decided on the road"
Knickerbocker said. "In order to
be champions on any level of bas-
ketball you have to be able to win
on the road."
The Lady Jackets will have
their chance to prove their legiti-
macy as the conference leader
when they face Sul Ross State in
the altitude of Alpine on Saturday.
