T t may not have been in
I the line of duty; how-
-M^ever, the loss is just as
painful. Delta County Sher-
iff’s Department Deputy
Kevin Wingfield Jr. died last
Tuesday afternoon returning
to his Hopkins County resi-
dence following his shift in
Cooper after a one-vehicle
accident on Farm-to-Market
Road 71.
“He was veiy dependable
and good at his job,” said
Delta County Sheriff Ricky
Smith. “We are saddened by
the loss of a good officer.”
Flags flew at half staff
throughout Delta County in
honor of the father, brother,
son, true cowboy and dedi-
cated officer with a fun-lov-
ing personality. Engaged to
Jennifer Booker Mason, the
couple had planned nuptials
for May 18, 2014. He is
survived by his eight-year
old son, Steven.
The Texas Department
of Public Safety reported
Wingfield, originally of
Commerce, was not be-
lieved to have died from
injuries associated with the
crash.
Wingfield, 28, was
reported to have been driv-
ing a 2008 Dodge pickup
truck southbound on FM
1536 at approximately 4:30
p.m. Tuesday when for an
unknown reason the vehicle
crossed the intersection of
FM 71 and struck a fence.
“We believe that to be
true as there was just minor
Kevin Wingfield Jr.
damage to his truck,” said
Delta County Sheriff Ricky
Smith on the fallen officer.
Wingfield was reported
by the Department of Public
Safety to have walked about
30 feet away from the accident
before collapsing after having
apparently suffering a seizure.
An autopsy has been ordered
to help determine his cause of
death.
On May 27, 2007 he was
involved in a severe accident
on State Highway 11 just west
of Sulphur Springs while re-
turning home from work early
in the morning.
“He was lucky to be alive,”
said Sheriff Smith referenc-
ing Wingfield’s first accident
agreeing with the initial
conclusion of the DPS. “He
was j ust shy of his one year
anniversary serving Delta
County.”
A peace officer for seven
years, Wingfield served as a
jailer/reserve deputy for Delta
County, Hopkins County,
Point, Winfield and Cumby.
He also was a volunteer
fire fighter for the Tira Fire
Department and volunteered

Corps.
“He knew many officers,”
said the sheriff on his only
transport officer. An Honor
Guard from Hopkins County
led his funeral procession
along with the Delta County
Sheriff’s Department and Tira
Fire Department on Saturday.
His funeral was Saturday
morning, Aug. 10 at 11 a. m. at
Cross Trails Cowboy Church
in Fairlie, Texas - in the
church he was baptized.
Bro. Oliver Mowat offici-
ated the service which hosted
over 85 area officers and emer-
gency personnel. Many memo-
ries were shared aloud along
with a photo slideshow and
some of his favorite country
songs before a full church.
A dedication of George
Strait’s, “The Cowboy Rides
Away” was performed on
guitar. The service closed with
a poem from his favorite mov-
ies, “8 Seconds.”
Cowboy Is His Name
There's a hundred years of
history and a hundred before
that
Ail gathered in the thinkin'
Goin' on beneath this hat.
The cold flame burns within
him
Til his skin's as cold as ice
And the dues he paid to get
here
Are worth every sacrifice.
All the miles spend sleepy
drivin'
All the money down the drain,
All the 'if I’s' and 'nearly's,'
All the bandages and pain,
All the female tears left dryin',
All the fever and the fight
Are just a small down pay-
ment
On the ride he makes tonight.
It's guts and love and glory,
One mortal's chance at fame.
His legacy is rodeo
And cowboy is his name.

By Cindy Roller
Editor/Lioness Reporter
Want to roar like a Lion?
Well, it is easy and rewarding.
The mission of the Lions Club
of Cooper is to do more than
just growl or flip pancakes at
Chiggerfest. The funds raised
by the Club help those in need
internationally by hosting
camps for children with dia-
betes and more locally by pro-
viding eye glasses and schol-
arships for students.
Each member has an ap-
plication form. Members can
range from community leaders,
neighbors, friends, religious
affiliates to local professionals.
Serving as a Lion is an honor,
and you will receive a really
cool, yellow vest too.
The Club met last Thursday.
The meeting, held at City Hall,
was presided over by Club
President Margaret Chessher.
The nine present brainstormed
how to help promote atten-
dance at regular meetings.
“We want this to be a meet-
ing to be proud to bring your
friends,” said President Chessh-
er. For only $18 a month, mem-
