Charleston and Lake Creek News
By Vicki Vasco
We had a nice Vacation
Bible School last week
at the Methodist with 10
children and 14 adults.
Lyn Phillips and Julie Kay
Swaim were the leaders.
The children and the adults
seemed to have a good time.
Billy Watson was the Candle
Lighter Sunday. He was one
of the ushers, Madeline
Ingram, and Conlee Murray
were the other ushers. Pam
Anderson was the Worship
Leader, and Lyn Phillips
was the Children’s Leader.
She talked about the Bible
School.
Our ill ones are better.
Grover Nabors was able to
be back in Church. Gwen
Pickering Wood is doing
better. Dean Houchins is
doing better. Julie Kay
Swaim is doing better,
and was back in Church
Sunday.
Brenda Stewart’s mother
passed away. She was in
Las Vegas at the time.
Bonnie Jean Nabors
Spivey of Garland visited
her mother last week. While
she was in Charleston, she
stopped by to see her cousin
Grover Nabors.
Twenty-one ladies attended
the Family & Consumer
Science Delta County
Extension Club meeting
Monday afternoon. Janice
Cattanach, a Jewelry artist,
of Cooper had the program.
It was on Silver Refinery.
Dolores Jackson’s name
was drawn to win the piece
of silver that Janice made.
Peggy Durham of Pecan Gap
was the hostess.
The jail inmates from the
Cooper Jail painted the fence
and cleaned the East Delta
Community Center Tuesday.
It sure does look nice. Rick
Murray fixed a bar-b-cue
lunch for them that day. They
also painted the front gate at
the Charleston Cemetery.
Kendra Ingram and her
family went back to Beaver’s
Bend last week end.
John Ed and Carolyn
Nabors, Fletcher, Cia, and
Jentry, Martin, Jackson,
and Hudson went to Conroe
August 3 to Liz and Bill
Jackson’s 50th Wedding
Anniversary. Carolyn retired
May 31 from the Guaranty
Bond Bank in Commerce
after working there 13
years. Her folks had a
surprise retirement party for
her beside their swimming
pool. Carolyn goes to see
her mother once a month.
Her mother is living in
Conroe in the Compassion
Care Home in River
Oaks. Jentry is taking
gymnastics. Fletcher and
Cia have started their
new home down south of
Charleston on the Hemby
land.
Birthdays: Sadie Emerson
8/22; Louise Rosson 8/22;
Michael Worden 8/23;
and Robert Braden 8/24.
Happy birthday, folks!
Klondike News
By John & Elizabeth Hopkins
I thought they were gone.
I walked from the front door
to the car and saw not a
one. I wanted to cheer—the
grasshoppers were gone!!!
But when I returned from my
errands, I wanted to cry. They
weren’t gone after all. Oh,
well! It gives me hope that
they will disappear because
they are growing fewer in
number daily!
Nelma Dodd is having her
own celebration this week.
She was able to go to church
for the first time in almost three
months! Congratulations to
her on her progress.
Pearl Foster said her pain is
gone and there is only soreness
from the procedure. But that
was modified Saturday when
her grandson and his family
came in from McAllen for
a visit. They got here about
lunch time and visited before
going on to other stops. Gene
and Cindy came for lunch on
Sunday.
Last Friday was Wanda and
Billy Helms’ 58th wedding
anniversary. They celebrated
by going out to eat, doing some
shopping and just having fun.
Mabel Wheat was getting a
rain shower at her house when
I called Sunday afternoon.
She went to church again with
Jerrell and Jeff Wheat who
was in from Shreveport, LA.
After service, everyone went
to the DQ for lunch. Her other
visitors this week included
Marion Miller, who stopped by
one night, and Chris Shaw, who
came for an hour’s visit before
work. Mac Larkin, a 98 year
old lady from Paris, came with
her caretaker and spent about
two hours with Mabel.
Patricia Blundell went out
to Tina and Bimbo Love’s this
week and got another fresh
watermelon and some fresh
okra. Patricia also heard from
Rebecca and Ricky.
Visitors to Billy Martin’s
home this week included Dee,
Ross and baby Tristin. Cassie
and Brionna are expected on
Monday.
Jerry and Janet Currin had
a visit from long-time friend
Dale Merkle and his new wife
Mary. The Merkle’s came
in on Thursday of last week.
The Currins, the Merkles, and
Jerry and Sylvia Wood went
to Pecan Gap for dinner at the
Fish Place. Janet also saw
on Facebook that Jason had
attended the awards banquet
for Preferred Foods Service
Company. He was surprised
to receive the Presidential
award. The recipient of this
award is personally selected by
the president of the company.
That’s quite an honor for Jason.
On Aug. 23, Janet is going to
go with Jason and Jennifer for
a sonogram. She will get to
“meet” Caden for the first time!
Jerry said they enjoyed a quick
shower at their place Sunday
afternoon, too. (OK, now I’m
jealous - where’s my rain?!!)
Maggie Thomas and Randy
Harrison drove to Garland
Tuesday to “sit” with Violet
and Harrison while Tim, Em
and Little Maggie went out
to lunch. New Life Baptist
Church was in Vacation Bible
School this week. Maggie
attended each night but one.
There was an average of 55
children and 45 workers there.
The theme for the school was
G.P.S. - God’s People Serving,
The group made 100 tray
favors and several blankets
for Children’s Medical Center,
collected school supplies for
Cooper Elementary School,
and made over 50 snack
bags for the teachers at CES.
Friday was Parent’s Night and
featured hamburgers, hot dogs,
a big water slide and a slippery
slide. The students sang songs
and recited Scriptures they
had learned this week for the
parents. All had a good time.
Tira and Birthright News
By Jan Vaughn, Special Correspondent, Sulphur Springs News-Telegram
Tira Volunteer
Firefighter Kevin Wingfield,
Jr. was killed in a one vehicle
accident on Tuesday, August
6th. The Delta County Sheriff’s
Office, where Kevin was
employed as a deputy/jailer,
is collecting donations to help
with funeral expenses. We
want to extend our sympathy
and prayers to the family.
I received the
following note from Sheila
Boyd and I’m sorry that I
was not aware of this death
in time to report it until now.
Our condolences go out to the
family. Sheila says, “I would
like to thank our community
for the support and prayers
during the passing of my step-
dad, Dennis Powell. It is never
easy to loose a loved one, but
with family, friends and God’s
help the recovery has began.”
Posey Baptist Church
will host a one-day Bible
School Summer Camp this
Saturday, August 10th, from 9-
2:30. The congregation would
like to encourage children
from Kindergarten to sixth
grade to “come discover The
Gift.” Lunch will be served.
For more information, please
contact Nancy Potts at 903-
243-6707.
Yvonne Weir, Sue
Janway, and 18 others from
First Assembly of God Church
in Cooper traveled to Eureka
Springs, Arkansas on Friday,
July 26th, to see the Great
Passion Play. They spent the
night in Rogers, Arkansas
then traveled back to Eureka
Springs to see the Thorncrown
Chapel and have lunch. They
arrived back in Cooper around
10 p.m. Yvonne comments,
“Everyone made it to church
the next morning.”
Shirley Evans
and Betty Weir traveled to
Blossom on Wednesday to the
home of Dorris Prunty, where
they enjoyed a wonderful meal
prepared by Mrs. Prunty and
spent the afternoon visiting.
Mrs. Prunty is a retired
teacher, who worked in Special
Education at North Hopkins
School. Mrs. Evans will begin
teaching in that position again
later this month. Following
their visit, Shirley and Betty
met Shirley’s daughter-in-law,
Mendy Evans, her children,
Lindsay and Levi, her niece
from Oklahoma and Mendy’s
father, Mr. Harness, in Paris.
Mendy and her family were
returning to their home in
Colorado Springs following a
visit to Texas and Oklahoma.
Bobbie and Debbie
Harris at Pleasant Grove
Farms had a back to school
party on Saturday. Sherry
Smiddy reports, “A huge
lunch was served with brisket,
hot dogs, hamburgers, baked
beans and the best potato salad
ever! There were water slides,
swimming, four wheelers
and everything that every kid
would ever want to do!” Those
attending included Richard
and Carolyn Markland, and
Adam and Shea Stewart, along
with Salem, Baylor, Caleb and
Kason from North Carolina;
Nick and Tonya Moore with
Gracie and Evan, Kathy Day,

Several of you called to
find out why I didn’t have an
article last week in the paper
and I appreciate your concern.
I saw a doctor last Monday
and I am doing better. I would
appreciate folks calling me or
e-mailing me with news as
my time is now limited. Folks
that live away from Pecan
Gap sure like to read about
you in the paper, even the little
things. So if you can stand the
heat, get out and make news!
Nine year old Chas Branco
spent 4 days recently with
his grandparents Jerry and
Anne Lester. Chas enjoyed
spending time with his Papaw
and learning about farming
things.
Leslie and Debra Davis,
David and Tammy Cobbs,
Ron and Darlene Leach, and
Gary and Candy Carky, all
from Dallas, were Friday
guests of Peggy Durham.
They enjoyed eating at the
Fish Place in Pecan Gap and
plan to be back soon.
Dona White was hostess for
the Ladies Club Wednesday,
August 7, and served delicious
refreshments. Nine members
were present and plans were
made to serve the Fannindel
teachers and staff a salad
luncheon before school starts.
Toni Woodall celebrated
her birthday with friends
with an outing and lunch
at Cozy Cappuccino in
Paris on Tuesday, August 6.
Those helping her celebrate
included Wanda White,
Peggy Sandlin, Peggy Moss,
Peggy Durham, and Nelda
Campbell. Some members
of the Birthday Club were
missed greatly and they
are Fredia Clark, Lois
Amundson, Anna Bolton,
and Sharline Freeman.
John Moss and Morris
White entertained James
Campbell Tuesday while
Nelda was enjoying Toni’s
birthday. Morris bought
hamburgers at the East Side
Cafe in Ladonia and the three
had a good time visiting and
solving problems. Nelda
reports that they were
laughing a lot when she
came home and wonders if
they drank the tea that she
had or if Morris bought
stronger drinks in Ladonia.
WHATEVER!
Joyce and Kenneth
Massie visited Billie and
Bobby McCarrell Saturday
afternoon and night. They
enjoyed eating, visiting, and
playing Spinner Dominoes.
Bobby and Kenneth worked
together at Sears in the
Dallas area from 1959 until
retirement and Billie and
Joyce worked with Home
Interior Decorations for
many years. They had a
good time.
Gary Don Erwin came
home from the hospital
after having surgery and 2
weeks in the hospital, but
was planning on going back
to Paris Regional for re-hab
Sunday afternoon. Continue
to remember Gary Don.
Jack Kiley is better and
is due to come home from
Paris re-hab on Monday of
this week. Keep Jack in your
prayers.
Our sympathy goes to the
family of Shirley Cooksey
who passed away recently.
Folks remember Earl and
Shirley as a loving couple
who ran the Lumber Yard in
Pecan Gap for many years.
Reuben and Carol Trussell
entertained their 15 year old
granddaughter, Kelli Lara, the
first weekend in August. Kelli
lives in Mansfield, TX with
her parents. Anissa Trussell
Lara is her mother. Kelli
was shown the highlights of
her grandfather’s world. She
ate at the Pecan Gap Fish
Place, met Ed, James and
John at East Side, attended
First Baptist Church, saw
the World Famous Glass
Restrooms on the Sulphur
Springs Square, drove a Cub
Cadet all over Ed and Karen
Pickard’s land looking for a
goat who thinks he is a cow
and fed apples to Ed’s horses.
On the way home Tuesday,
Kelli and Peepaw stopped to
tour Dallas Arboretum.
