Lions to a 7-3 victory and a
sweep of a double header
over the Laredo Bombers.
Lions won the first game
with three-run ninth-inning
rally, 7 to 6.
Greg Rodriguez, 8-0, got
credit for both victories, re-
lieving in the first and start-
ing the second.
Lions' South Texas Semi-
pro League record now is 13
won and 3 lost.
Little Leaguers and fans
were organizing a traveling
cheering section this week
for support of the Mercedes
LL A11-Stars in their first
tournament game Thursday
night at Harlingen. Game
time is 8:30 p.m. at Pend-
leton Park for a contest be-
tween Mercedes and Harlin-
gen Stars.
Winner will meet Ray-
mondville Stars on the same
diamond Saturday night.
Local All-Star players in-
clude Arturo Gonzales, Mark
Savarino, Sammy Irby, Andy
Martinez, Robert Garza,
John Mize, Joe Reagan, Ro-
lando Garza, Ray Ramirez,
Adelino Garza, Felimon Go-
mez, E. Nave jo, Alex Lopez,
Ray Gonzales, Rollie More-
no, Rey Trevino and Gil-
bert Chapa. Team manager
is Tom Freeman, with Leo
Ramirez assisting him.
First Party At Center Attracts 30
First planned activity for
the new Queen City Senior
Citizens Center took place
Tuesday with a games party
attended by some 30 senior
citizens of the Mercedes
area.
Six tables were set up with
Parents’ 55th
Mrs. E. E. Marchant left
by air plane Tuesday to be
with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. E. E. Steiner of Al-
buquerque, N.M., on their
55th wedding anniversary.
Last Saturday Mr. and
Mrs. Marchant attended the
funeral of H. T. Heyer in
Cuero. He died of a heart at-
tack.
Garcia Visitors
Baldo Garcia, son of Mr.
and Mrs. B. Garcia, flew
back to Dallas last Thurs-
day after having spent four
days here in the home of his
parents. Also visiting in the
home of his parents were
members of his band, “Days
Before", who had just re-
turned from a three-week
engagement in Acapulco,
Mexico.
Pucketts Visit
Mrs. Lee Ross Puckett Jr.
and children, Megan and
Trey of Gonzales spent a
week at the home of her par-
ents, Dr, and Mrs. Ralph
Cintron.

Army Private Ernesto
Galvan, 24, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roberto Galvan of Mer-
cedes, has completed eight
weeks of advanced infantry
training July 11 at Ft. Ord,
Cal.
He received specialized
instruction in small unit
tactics and in firing such
weapons as the M-14 rifle,
the M-60 machine gun and
the 3.5-inch rocket launcher.
Galvan received a B.B.A.
degree from Pan American
College in 1966.

evening, according to Mrs,
Howell, as well as other
types of activities to be sche-
duled later.

James Dollery and Lauro
Saldana, Mercedes high
school agriculture teachers,
attended a Central Power
and Light Co. short course
at Bayview this past week.
Electrical problems and
wiring of all phases were
taught and discussed. The
course is offered to keep
agriculture teachers in be-
tter step with changing ideas,
enabling them to teach elec-
tricity better in their clas-
ses.
New Activities
For Verduzcos
Verduzco Mercantile
Company, a firm involved
in business enterprises here
for several years, announced
a new phase of business ac-
tivity this week. The com-
pany, located at 114 North
Texas Avenue, has pur-
chased another, non-local
department store's stock of
merchandise and is featuring
it in a special sale, the first
of its type ever offered by
the Verduzcos.
Egyptian-lsraeli Situation Described
Zonta Club of East Hidal-
go County conducted its July
meeting at the Bronco, Wes-
laco, last Thursday evening,
when Mrs. Joe Brennan, a
recent evacuee of the troub-
le-zone, gave a business wo-
man's viewpoint of the con-
ditions under which she and
her family lived before they
were evacuated from the
Suez Canal area.
Born in Southwest Africa
and receiving her college
training at Capetown, Mrs.
Brennan also described
the beauty of her native land,

D. MacVean were in charge
of arrangements.

Blackwell, conducted a short
business meeting following
the program when reports
were given by the Secretary,
Mrs. W. B. Lauder Jr. and
Mrs. MacVean, treasurer.
Mrs. Ed Stuart, in charge of
Yearbooks for the Club, also
reported.
The August Zonta meet-
ing will be arranged by Miss
Elvira Hinojosa.
