Staff Named
The staff has been recently-
chosen for the Weatherford High
School yearbook, the Melon Vine,
y for 1956-’57, The staff includes
Billy Baxter, editor; Gale Speight,
assistant editor; Bill Jordan, man-
> ager; Randy Ausmus, assistant
manager; Buddy Polser circula-
tion manager; Georgia Willhite,
Senior Class Editor; Linda Slocum,
Junior Class Editor; Lee Roy Ray,
Freshman Class Editor.
Club Editors are Sammie Poy-
nor, Molly Taylor, Lynn Barker.
Elouise Peoples, Sam Cotter, and
James Mathison are Sports Edi-
tors. Mary Sparkman, Sharon
Beauchamp, and Pat Bragg are
in charge of snapshots. Arrange-
ment and composition will be
handled by Joe Chastain, Margie
Martsolf, Dorothy Thomas, and
Junivive Gentry. The sponsor is
Miss Juanita Davis.
Miss Davis stated that the work
on the Melon Vine is progressing
satisfactorily up to this time and
the class editors have made their
file of student names. As soon as
the pictures return, these editors
will start their task of identify-
ing, classifying, and arranging
them for the class sections of the
yearbook.

Announced
The executive council of the
Senior Class met Tuesday, Oc-
tober 6. The following chairmen
for the various committees were
announced:
Finance projects, Maryonna
Barnes; Publicity, Charles Daugh-
erty; Program, Clifford Smith;
1 Welfare Joyce Golden; Gift, Sam
Cotter.
Plans for Senior Day activities
will be discussed in the next meet-
ing. No definite- date has been set.

by the G. A. A. for October 19,
which is to be a friendly girls
^ -football game between the Sen-
ior and Junior girls. Big plans
are being made for this unusual
event, including the presentation
of the G, A, A. Beau, Bob Shel-
ton, during the halftime cere-
monies. It* js going to be a halar-
'iouk game, sp everybody come!
The, P-TA is sponsoring a chili
supper to be held Monday night,
October 15. Tickets are now on
sale for $1.00. Students are urged
4 to attend, for this supper is given
in order to furnish the student
- loimge in the new school building.

Chili Supper
A chili supper will be held Mon-
day night, October 15, at the
Youth Center. The home room
mothers are in charge of the tick-
et sales for the event which is
sponsored by the Senior High
P-T A. Tickets at $1.00 each have
been on sale for the last week,
and may be purchased any time
before Monday night.
One of the P-TA’s projects for
this year is the furnishing of the
student lounge at the new high
school building, and the funds from
this chili supper will be used for
this purpose.

The Student of the Week Com-
mittee also reported its standards
for the student of the week.
In the business meeting of Oct-
ober 8, 1956, Monday night,
October 15, 1956, was set aside for
a Student Council Workshop.
Beginning Thursday and Friday,
football tags will be sold to all
students and everyone is expect-
ed to buy one in order to back
fully the Kangaroos.
FFA Trip Planned
Two members and an advisor of
the Weatherford F. F. A. chapter
will leave Sunday night, October
14, at 10 p. m. for the National
F. F. A. Convention in Kansas
City, Missouri,
Bill Chane, president, and Jim-
my Holder, treasurer are mem-
bers, and Mr. W. L. Barber, the
new Vocational Agriculture I
teacher, is the advisor who will
leave on the special train from
Fort Worth. Between 500 and 600
boys from Texas will be on this
train.
The National F.F.A. Convention
will be held between October 15
and 19. The group returns Fri-
day, October. 20.
Cotter to Address
Meeting at S.M.U.
Sam Cotter, W.H.S. senior, will
address a general assembly of
high school teachers and students
on the Southern Methodist Uni-
versity campus Saturday, October
13.
The annual two day occasion is
the North Texas Activities Con-
ference of the University Inter-
scholastic League. The subject
Sam is going to speak on is “Our
Most Successful Project in the
Weatherford High School Student
Council.” Tommy Taylor, presi-
dent of the W.H.S. Student Coun-
cil will preside at one of the sec-
tional meetings of the conference.
Some other students of W. H. S.
will attend accompanied by Miss
Francis Smith, sponsor of the
W.H.S. Student Council.
The presentation of the Band
and Football sweethearts was
made in a half, time ceremony
during the Longview game at
Kangaroo Stadium, Friday, Oc-
tober 5.
After going through other
marching routines, the band form-
ed a large heart facing the north
stands. Saundra Copeland, the
Football sweetheart for the 1956
season, was driven onto the field
in a red and white ’57 Ford con-
vertible d r iv e n by Bob Eason.
Saundra, wearing a red velveteen
dress and hat, black shoes, and
white gloves, was escorted onto
the field and into the heart by
the Kangaroo tri-captains, Ned
Dickey, Charles Daugherty, and
Sophomores Hold
Year's Elections
The Sophomore class held a
class meeting in the Junior High
Auditorium October 1, to elect
officers and a candidate for Melon
Vine. Queen.
The officers that were elected
were president, Keith Korges; vice
president, Melvin Peoples; secre-
tary and treasurer Wayne Maul-
din, The Sophomores elected Dar-
lene Horstmann as their candidate
for Melon Vine Queen,
Qualifications

Ted Hartness, chairman of the
Student of the Week Committee
and his committee members sub-
mitted the following qualifica-
tions for a Student of the Week
to the Student Council members.
1. A student in W. H. S. who has
the following qualifications.
A. School loyalty.
B. High moral standing,
C. Regular attendance.
D. Has made outstanding
school achievement.
E. A student who does good
work over a period of
time in some particular
department or in general.
Any homeroom may submit a
nomination to the committee. All
nominations should be turned in-
to the committee 24 hours before
student council meetings. A stu-
dent can be a student of the week
once a semester.
The principal can veto a nomi-
nation if the student has poor cit-
izenship.

played “Sweetheart of Sigma Chi,’*
Tom presented Saundra a bouquet
of large white mums, after which
she received the traditional kiss
from each of the captains and was
escorted back to the car and driven
off the field.
Band sweetheart Marilyn Mur-
ray was then driven onto the
north side of the field and es-
corted into the heart formation
by Glenn Porterfield, band presi-
dent. Marilyn wore a turquoise
princess - style corduroy dress
with matching hat and shoes and
black gloves. Glenn presented
Marilyn a bouquet of large white
mums and gave her a congratula-
tions kiss, while the band played
“Will You Remember.” He then-
escorted Marilyn to the car and
they were both driven off the
field.
The press - box announcer for
the ceremonies was Mr. Bea
Branch, high school band director.
Students to Attend
Press Conference
Several members of the W.H.S,
Journalism class are planning to
attend the North Texas Student
Activities Conference at S.M,U„
Saturday.
The members of the Grass Burr
Staff who plan to go are Betty
Green, Editor; Jean Choate and
Clifford Smith, circulation man-
agers; Molly Taylor, advertising
manager; and Michael Patrick, as-
sistant editor. Miss May Belle
Whitsett will accompany the
group.
The meeting will start at 8:43
and will be over at noon. There
are several meetings which will
be going on. These include journa-
lism, ready writing, slide rule and
number sense; speech and student
council.
The discussion groups are lead
by expert teachers and students
who explain, discuss, and demon-
strate how to conduct the differ-
ent activities of the interscholas-
tic league in high school.
Bob Shelton Elected To
Represent G.A.A. As Beau
The Girl’s Athletic Association
chose Bob Shelton, a senior from
Miss Davis’s homeroom to repre-
sent them as G. A. A. Beau for
1956-57. He was elected Monday,

October 9, during the first sched-
uled meeting of the club this year.
Bob, who is a starting member
of the Weatherford Kangaroo3
was born in Texarkana, Arkansas,
moved to Weatherford in the 6th
grade where he attended Crockett
grade school.
As a senior this yeai\ Bob be-
longs to the F. B. L. A., F. H. A*
and the “W” Association.
Steak and chicken are his fav-
orite foods and his favorite pas-
time is watching football games
on T. V.
“I like food and good clothes,”
stated Bob when asked what were
his likes, “but one thing I don’t
like is stuck-up people.”
Bob wants to attend college after
he graduates this year, but he
doesn’t know where as of yet.
When asked how he felt about
being elected G. A. A. Beau, Bob
replied, “I think it is a great hon-
or.”
Bob will be presented on Oct-
ober 19, 1956, during the half-
time of the game between the
Senior and Junior girls.
