if it was just the leftovers thrown
into a barrel. Balancing with its

and peanut farmers were noting an
improvement in their peanut crops

Sports column begins
today In Times & News
Sports Corner, a locally written
sports column, begins this week in
the Times & News.
The column debuted last year
during football season. And due to
response received this season from
" readers who missed seeing the
Lee County's unemployment rate
took a big drop in August, falling to
2.9 percent from 4.3 percent the
month before.
This gives the county a labor force
of 5,393, with 159 unemployed.
Fayette County’s jobless rate fell
slightly to 3.2 percent in August,
from 3.4 percent the month before.
The county has a labor force of
10,761, with 343 out of work
Washington County’s unemploy-
ment rate fell to 3 percent, a

Ast fights break out as
Geburtstag nears end
A number of fights Saturday night
at the Giddings Geburtstag marred
the end of the celebration, said the
Lee County Sheriff's Department
Several people were arrested
beginning at 6 p.m. at Airline Park
Officers said that county, state, city,
law enforcement officers and a
private security guard wrestled for
control during several fights.
One woman was sent to the
hospital after being kicked in the
head at a fight at the softball park,
officers reported. And several fights
occurred after the dance.
"We had to break up three fights
after the dance, and all of the fights
were alcohol related,” said Deputy
Calvin Robertson
T-shirts and medals will be awarded
for prizes. County Clerk Carol
Dismukes said she expects around
200 entries in the mini-marathon.

Voter registration
deadline nearing
Lee County citizens who wish to
register to vote in the upcoming
constitutional amendment election
have until Friday, Oct. 1 to register
in person. Voters who wish to
register should come by the Lee
County Clerk’s office at the county
courthouse.
The official deadline is Sunday,
Oct. 3, so if voters who wish to
register by mail gets their ballot in
by Monday, they will be processed

The Giddings Buffaloes will travel
to Gonzales Friday night to meet the
lOth-rated team in state at 8 p.m.
Gonzales returns this year with a
4-0 record Giddings is 1-3 for the
season.
Gonzales returns with nine
offensive starters and 10 defensive
starters.
The Apaches operate out of a
multiple type offense using the I,
Wing T, Power I. Strong Wing and
Strong Pro formations.
Offensive standouts are quarter-
back Cory Green and fullback Troy
Allen.
Defensively, the Apaches use the
4-3 defense and are led by middle
linebacker Roy Johnson.

some slow, soaking moisture to the
nearly parched peanut crop and
pastures in the Lee County area on

Most areas of the county averaged
three-quarters of an inch to well over
an inch, although some areas

The heaviest rainfall fell just south
of Giddings with 1.7 inches at the
Paul Fischer home on the Old Serbin
Road. Moving just north of his home,
residents reported as little rain as .3

A community-wide committee of
40 people is beginning a study of the
facility needs of the Giddings
Independent School District. The
committee, appointed by the
Giddings School Board, is looking at
the present and future needs of the
district.
Being considered is a possible
bond election for new construction to
be voted on in January.
Three people were indicted last
Tuesday when the Lee County Grand
Jury convened.
Adolfo Constanon Cabrera of
Giddings was indicted on a charge of
Driving While Intoxicated, Subse-
quent.
Kerry Wayne Urban Jr. was
indicted on a charge of Criminal

The mini-marathon is being held

Dimes. Proceeds from the marathon

March of Dimes campaign.
The race will feature a 10K and
two -mile run, and a two-mile walk
