SALARY CAP - Will there be a $31
million salary cap in football next
year? It could be, but I seriously
doubt it.
Maybe 4 or 5 years down the line,
but I can't see it happening in the
facemasks were ripped off, and they
even had a few drop-kicks.
When it was all settled out, 12
players were ejected Miami has

NOLAN RYAN ERA ENDS -
After seven no-hitters, 324 wins, and
5,714 strikeouts, Nolan Ryan retired
last Wednesday after he tore an
ulnar collateral ligament in his right
elbow.
Ryan was possibly the best pitcher
that has ever played. And maybe the
best fighter, too. I'll never forget
him beating up on Robin Ventura
when he charged Ryan at the
mound.
All in all, Nolan Ryan is a first
class guy on and off the field.
Baseball fans will always remember
Ryan as the best who ever played the
game - or at least the best of his
time.

EMMITT SIGNS - Thank good-
ness for that, huh? Without Emmitt
Smith, the Cowboys just weren't a
complete team.
I agree, the $13.6 million contract
was a ridiculous amount But if any
player is worth that much money, he
definitely is. If Thurman Thomas is
making $4 million a year, Emmitt
should be making $5 million. There’s
no comparison.
If there is going to be a salary cap
next year, it can get ugly. Owner
Jerry Jones dished out all his
ammunition to Smith, so what
happens next season when Troy
Aikman's contract comes up. It’s
going to be interesting
Emmitt Smith will play in his first
home game this Sunday against
Green Bay. The momentum is in
favor of the Cowboys, by about 13
points.

ATM RECOVERS - After the bye
this past week and a 73-0 rout the
week before, the Aggies should be
out to punish Texas Tech Saturday.
Texas A&M’s only loss came from
a fired up Oklahoma team the
second game of the season. The
Sooners pounded them 44-14.
Since then, the Aggies have
recovered and look to be anxious in
dealing out some shots of their own.
Look for a good game against Tech
early Saturday, but ATM should
prevail. Aggies by 17 points.
MIAMI BRAWL - Who saw the
bench-clearing brawl that broke out
Saturday between the Miami
Hurricanes and the Colorado
Buffaloes? For those of you who
missed it, it was incredible -
probably the longest and best
football fight I’ve ever seen.
Any true football fan must admit
that they like a good little exchange
of licks every once in a while, but
this got nasty. Helmets were flying.
FOOTBALL FEVER - As football
season cranks up once again,
everyone is starting to get excited.
There is just something missing
without football. A year is not quite
complete without it.
There has been lots of action in
sports lately. Between Nolan Ryan’s
last game in baseball and Emmitt
Smith’s signing, the year is already
full of excitement.
' I don't know about you, but I’m
really excited, so let's get underway
with the 1993-94 football action.

PENNANT RACE - All the
pennant races are pretty well
wrapped up, with the exception of
the NL West Division.
The Braves and the Giants have
been at it for quite some time now. It
will come down to the last straw, but
I think Atlanta will find a way to pull
it out.

BUFFS - The Giddings Buffaloes
lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to the
Yoakum Bulldogs last Friday night.
I did not actually get to see the
game, but from what I heard, it was
a defensive battle.
Giddings fans whom I spoke with
about the game said there were
• ‘some bad calls by the officials. One
in particular was a missed
interference call toward the end of
/ the game. It could have even been
• the difference in the outcome.
The Buffs (1-3) will travel to
; Gonzales this week for their final
> non-district game. Game time is
• tentatively set for 8 p.m.
OILER BLUES - For those of you
Oiler fans out there, I have bad news
for you. The Oilers have problems,
major ones. And it doesn’t look to
improve anytime soon.
So who watched the Houston game
Sunday? I did, but not for long It
was a total disaster with a
combination of poor coaching and
poor playing.
Jack Pardee’s job is now in
jeopardy. I have a feeling that a
couple more losses and he’ll be gone.
It’s not totally his fault, though. The
new defensive coordinator Buddy
Ryan hasn’t been doing his job. The
Rams scored a touchdown a quarter,
so something is wrong.
Houston has a much needed bye
this week before facing the Buffalo
Bills the following week in Monday
night football.
The Oilers better work on all their
problems before then, or it could be
a very long game.

STRUGGLING HORNS - The
Texas Longhorns (0-2-1) are off to
their worst start since 1938. That’s 55
years, so it’s pretty bad.
The Horns took a 41-10 whipping
this past weekend by the now 18th
ranked Louisville Cardinals.
It doesn’t look too promising
either Texas will play host to the
streaky Rice Owls this Saturday at 7
p.m. The Longhorns shouldn’t have
anything to worry about, right?
After all, the Owls haven't beaten
Texas in some 30, 31 years - I lose
count But this seems to be the year
for Texas to break some records, but
the wrong kind. I don’t expect
anyone to agree, but I'll take Rice by
6 points.
