annex cornerstone
For the first time in NHS history the football team is 11-0. And for the first time since
1996, the Indians have advanced to the regional semi-final round of the state playoffs.
Friday the tribe will try and be the first team since 1946 to advance to the regional finals
as well as the first team to win 12 games in a season when they face the Gunter Tigers
at C.H. Collins Stadium in Denton.
Noeona to be
a wonderland
By Tracy R. Mesler
MONTAGUE - In a tra-
dition as old as Texas is a
state, the Grand Masonic
Lodge of Texas will level the
cornerstone on the Montague
County Annex on Saturday,
Dec. 15.
County Judge Tommie
Sappington, himself a
Mason, informed the county
commissioner's court
Monday that he had received
confirmation of the time for
the leveling to be at 2 p.m.
Plans to have a tour of the
annex, which is currently
under construction, will
most likely, have to be post-
poned, the judge said
explaining the construction
schedule calls for the floor
installation to be underway,
and during that critical time
the ceremony.
As an advisory, Judge
Sappington told the court
that an item regarding how
to relocate the thousands of
records from the County
Clerk's office to the new
records storage vault being
constructed in the Annex
would be on a future agenda.
Sheriff Paul Cunningham
proudly informed the court
that not only did the Jail pass
its fourth consecutive
inspection by the State
Commission on Jail
Standards, again "without
any deficiencies," but the
state commission apparently
took to heart something

cause unnecessary expense
and delay to the project.
The court gave Judge
Sappington permission to
advertise the event and
schedule any other activities
to occur in conjunction with
the state commission that it
should not forewarn county
jails that an inspection was
coming.
"It was a surprise inspec-
tion wasn't it?" the judge
asked of the sheriff.
Montague County spent
over $1.4 million making
repairs and modifications to
the jail including repairing
damages to the facility
which occurred in the final
six months of the Bill
Keating administration. A
federal investigation resulted
in the indictment of Sheriff
Keating who died just prior
to be sentenced. Several jail-
ers were also indicted and
sentenced for their actions,
as were several prisoners
who brought contraband into
the facility.
The court approved book-
keeping entries allowing the
Elections Office and Road &
Bridge Precinct #3 to put
proceeds from the sale of
surplus items back into their
respective budgets.
The court approved an
agreement with Apris Inc.
which will allow the Texas
Department of Public Safety
to share the Sheriff's
Department information
with the firm.
County Tax Assessor-
Collector Sydney Newell
presented the certified tax
levy for the county which
totals $6,586,108.98 for the
2012 tax levy.
Sheriff Cunningham was
allowed to transfer $799.99
from the jail's budget to the
sheriffs department budget.
When the sheriff received a
new pickup, he gave his
pickup and its tool box to the
jail. Now he needs a new
tool box and wanted the
funds for that to come from
the jail.
