Members of the Montague County District 4H Food Challenge teams show off their
winnings after a successful contest.
411 really cooks!
Montague County 4-
H'ers are Cooking in District
Food Events
Move over Iron Chefs,
Montague County 4-H'ers
are cooking! Three teams
from Montague County
competed at the District 4-H
Food Challenge, which was
held Oct. 30 in Jacksboro.
Forty-three teams participat-
ed in this year's challenge.
The premise of the Food
Challenge is much like the
Food Network's Iron Chef
Series. A committee com-
prised of extension agents
from across the district
choose a recipe, which is not
revealed to the competitors.
The showdown begins when
competitors are given a list
of ingredients and a clue on
the chosen recipe. In just 40
minutes, the teams must pre-
pare the dish and an accom-
panying presentation to be
delivered to a panel of
judges.
The senior team from
Forestburg 4-H club-Heaven
Godwin, Malici Moore, Alex
Sharon, and Kendall
Wallace placed 2nd in the
Bread and Cereal category.
Two junior/intermediate
teams from the Forestburg 4-
H club competed in the con-
test. Montague Team #1 -
Matthew Wallace, Jodie
Toler, Hannah Fuytinck,
Joscelyn Riddles, and
Megan Metcalf placed 1st in
the Nutritious Snacks cate-
gory and Montague Team
#2-, Kaylein Fuytinck, Jamie
Hurd, Carson Cross, J.D.
Moore and Jessica Hurd
placed 3rd in Main Dish cat-
egory.
All teams said that work-
ing together was the best part
of this contest.
The second event took
place in Vernon as 175 boys
and girls from 24 counties
exhibited their nutritional
knowledge and cooking
skills at the Rolling Plains
District 4-H Food Show
Saturday, Nov. 10, at the
Wilbarger Auditorium.
Seniors will advance to the
State competition in June
2013. Each received a spe-
cial award and ribbon in
addition to advancing to the
State contest. Second place
senior winners will partici-
pate in the State event if the
first place winners can't take
part. Intermediate and Junior
Division winners also
received special awards and
ribbons but do not compete
beyond the District level.
Special cash awards,
sponsored by Santa Rosa
CattleWomen and Wichita
Falls Area CattleWomen
were also presented to first
and second place winners in
Main Dish in which beef was
an ingredient. Montague
County 4-H'er, Macie
McCollum won the Beef
award with 1st place in the
Junior Division.
Each contestant had
earned championships in
their county to advance to
the day-long competition at
the District meet. The dishes
were judged by panels of
professional home econo-
mists and 4-H leaders.
Contestants were quizzed on
nutritional values, prepara-
tion methods and costs of
preparation.
Montague County 4-
H'ers participated in:
Junior Division
Protein-1st place Macie

Nutrition Quiz Bowl
helps 4-H members enhance

other at one time, answering

with the use of an electronic
buzzer system. District
