Now for the election of Parker
for two terms and then the elec-
tion of a Southern man on the
Democratic ticket.
Parker is said to be red-head-
ed, and Davis is old enough to
be gray-haired. May we not
speak of them as the red and
gray heirs of the white house?
Ageut Sommerfield of the St.
Louis, Brownsville and Mexico
railroad was in the city VVednes-
day in the interest of his road.
Contracts are now signed to se-
cure the Lott road, besides deeds
to the land bonus and right-of-
way were given. Work an the
road will begiu within the next
sixty days.

At any rate, Mr. Rearst has
the satisfaction of knowing that
he is a thoroughbred. He spent
more than one million dollars in
the campaign, but he got his
share of advertising, and being
game, he is uot going to whine
aud snarl. A good loser is a
thing of beauty aud a joy for-
ever.

The solid South can always be
counted on to support the con-
stitution of the fathers and the
amendments legally made there-
to. Parker aud Davis stand ou
the same ground and will receive
the solid vote of the Southern
states at the election in Novem-
ber for president and vice-presi-
dent of the United States. The
election will show how many
more stales there are that will
adhere to first principles—that
have not gone of after new
goods.
The reunited Democracy of a
glorious nation has spoken. Al-
ton Brooks Parker, of New York,
and Henry G. Davis, of Wesi
Virginia, have been chosen to
lead the people on to victory.
If the people be true to themselv-
es, their country aud their God
on Tuesday, November 8th, the
black flag oi social equality,
militarism and plutociacy will
be torn from the flag staff and
in its plaee will float the flag of
Democracy, which means the rule
of the people for the people and
by the people.
Last week’s celebration in Re-
fugio was, as is always the case,
a glorious success, and there is
not one who attended but what
reports a most enjoyable time.
Our people pride themselves as
being prince of entertainers, and
on this recent occasion the'-' cer-
tainly proved that they merit
this title. Tuesday morning,
July 12th, dawned bright and
clear and at uu early hour there
was much activity iu preparing
for the tournament which was
the first act on the well prepared,
program. The contestants were
all rigged out in handsome uni-
forms, and about 8:30 a. m. be-
gan a parade through town, af-
ter which, all repaired to the
grounds above town and the
contest commenced. Percy John-
got first prize—a fine saddle—and
also won the first honor, a hand-
some gold medal. Gold medals
were awarded the three next best
runners, who were named in the
following order: Tom Heard,
second, Salve Droddy, third, and
John Droddy, fourth. After the
tournament the immense crowd
retired to the beautiful grove be-
low town where a sumptuous
feast of barbecued meats, bread,
pickles and coffee was served.
When the wants of the inner man
had been attended to seats were
found and there ensconced in
the shade of the majestic oak
pleasant conversation was in-
dulged in, while sweet strains of
music were discoursed by Go-
liad’s string band. About three
o’clock several couples of the
young people met at the court
house a nd tripped the light fan-
tastic toe until close ou to night.
The day’s peasure being over,
all returned to their respective
homes to arrange for the grand
ball at night. The merry dancers
began arriving at the hall at an
early hour, and by ten o’clock
the crowd was so large that corn
fortable dancing was hardy per-
mitted. The dance opened with
the grand march led by Miss Sai-
lie Linney of this city aud Mr.
Will Leahy of Mat his. Mazy
waltzes, lively two-steps and the
other dances on program wjeie
indulged in till the wee sma’
hours, when the tired crowd dis-
persed to homes and slumber.
Wednesday another tournament
was run for two cash prizes,
which were won by S. A. and
Worth Droddy, and at night a
dance, equally as enjoyable as
the one the n;ght previous, fol-
lowed. Victoria, Goliad and
many localities in the county were
represented here, and all unite
in praising the warm hospitality
of our people.
