have noticed something rather
disturbing. Why is gasoline so
much more expensive in Rains

areas? #

ning around $1.22, but on Hwy.
69, right outside of Greenville,
there is a small independent gas
station charging $1.16.
In Mineoia, Lindale and Tyler
the gas is averaging about
$1.13-1.18. Even the gas on the
interstate in Canton was running
$1_. 13-1.17. $0 why is Emory
gasoline so high?
The other day I took my son
to the doctor in Winnsboro and
I saved almost $5 by filling up
outside of Emory. I suppose

§7he following letter to Judge
SjStuart was sent to the Leader
[ office for publication.
j Dear Judge Stuart:
• I enclose the citation I re-
Cceived and my guilty plea along
with the $134.50 fine that was
imposed, and I am outraged.
A resident of Texas for 20
years and if you’ll check your
records, I've purchased a com-
bination hunt and fish for all 20
years. I was married for 18 of
•those years and bought a com-
bination hunting and fishing
{[license for my wife for all those
{years.
{ In those 20 years or anytime
{before, I have never received a
•citation from a game warden. If
{you'll check my driving record
and criminal record, you'll see
<!I don't break the law.
£ I'm fishing Tawakoni with a
{friend jn a 2-DAY-old boat.
^Officer G. Dugan came up and
checked licenses, fire extin-
guishers, asked about fish
taught and then asked to see
|ife jackets. We showed him
|two and explained a third was
lalso in the rod box. When asked
iabout a Type IV preserver, I
explained while unloading a
boat sold last week and reload-
ing this new boat for this tour-
nament, I must have left out my
jiype IV. Unloading a fully-
equipped bass boat takes lots of
room. Bedrooms, closet, hall-
ways, storage room and a bam
and somewhere at home w:
smy Type IV.
\ I've always been fortunate to
Slave lots of time outdoors. I
[certainly utilize Texas lakes and
[wildlife. I tournament bass fish
[and am on the lake most every
jweekend of every year. Because
•of this expensive hobby, I spend
[lots of money every year on
Bocal economies - including
jyours. I dove hunt, quail hunt,
' luck hunt, saltwater fish, turkey
nt and on a few occasions
ve been deer hunting. I've
en doing all these activities
jsince I was five years old. I'm
•now 49.1 don't keep black bass
[and haven't for over 10 years-1
[don't catch or kill more than my
[limit ever, and haven't for 45
[years. If I see someone breaking
Jour Parks and Wildlife laws I
•confront them verbally and look
{for a game warden. I don't write
complaint letters; or this is
probablv my second in 49
♦‘years. Irm always grateful for
{ the presence of game wardens
{and our Texas Parks and
{ Wildlife Department but this
‘ stinks!
( After getting the citation Sat-
5 urday morning, I was angry,
somewhat spoiling an otherwise
very nice day at me lake. Later
2 in the morning I saw the offi-
z cers loading their boat so they
{could have lunch and I reap-
5 proached them asking if they
wanted to see my third ap-
proved life vest or my 10-ft.
push pole which could be used
to save someone in distress.
They explained it was all a
Coast Guard matter and that a
Type IV was better because you
could throw it better. I'm not
■writing this to confront coast
guards rules, but only to say, it
stinks.
I then called your Justice
Court in Emory this morning
and discovered that the fine is
$134.50.1 find from another
friend who received one the
same day, he only has to send
$132.50. He offered to leave the
lake to purchase a Type IV to
avoid a citation, but was denied
his request.
I'm contacting Jerry Dean of
Honey Hole Magazine, Johnny
Davis of Anglers Choice, Ray
Scott of BASS, Charles Hensley
who is director of law enforce-
ment for TP&W, Bob Hood of
the Fort Worth Star Telegram,
as well as your local newspaper
Rains County Leader and Rains
County Area Chamber of Com-
merce, with a copy of this letter.
I'm doing this, not because I
can't afford $134.50, but to put
fishermen in your area on guard
for poaching such as this.
A fine of $134.50 for not car-
rying a Type IV life preserver
is outrageous.
I've probably been checked
20 times by game wardens in
the past and have never before
been asked for this type pre-
server, so I'm certain many,
many fishermen are not aware
of this requirement.
I'm glad game wardens are
out there fighting crime & pro-
tecting our wildlife resources,
but their time could and should
be spent on more evil things
than I've committed.
Is the punishment commen-
surate with the crime?
Yours very angered,
Jim Lowen

East Tawakoni and Quinlan are
in the $ LI 4-1.18 range. In
Winnsboro, one station is charg-
knitpicking, but pennies add up.
Last week alone I saved over
$10 by buying gas elsewhere.
Many drivers in Emory are
on fixed incomes and many of
those who work make mini-
S
mum wage or a little above.

Dear Editor, Winnsboro, one station is charg- are buying gas outside die coun-
Just about every week I see ing $1.14, another is charging ty. The local merchants want us
1 ad in the Rains County $1.06, and yet another only $.98 to patronize them, but they need
to give us a fair deal too. Some-
one told me the gas prices are
Leader asking us to support the a gallon,
local businesses, but lately I In Greenville the gas is rqn-
high in Emory right now
because the merchants are try-
ing to cash in on the tourists
visiting the lakes. I do not think
having the highest gas prices in
East Texas will do much for the
tourism industry here.
I would really like to be able
to support all the local mer-
chants but it's getting to the
point where I canrt afford it/You
can leave Rains County in any
direction and find cheaper gas
prices. That is a sad situation.

OKAY, WHO DONE IT? Someone ran into these signs at
the comer of Hwy. 19 and FM 2795 (Quitman Street) on the
courthouse square recently and left this crumpled heap. Reserve
Deputy Trent Davis placed the time at approximately 5:30 a.m.
Sunday, Aug. 11th. The city’s trash receptacle was also totally
demolished. Workers from the Texas Dept, of Transportation and
the City of Emory cleaned up the mess early Monday morning.
