WHAT COULD THESE two men
have in common'’ Other than the
fact that Thurman Cooke. 82. and
Jeff Giles. 33, are grandfather and
grandson, they both care about and
tike to help others. And they do that
in remarkably similar ways. Thur-
man has walked in almost every
walk-a-thon for several years The
donations of his backers helped the
purpose of the walk. Jeff, on the
other hand, runs to raise money. He
began in 1979 when he competed
in a muscular dystrophy event,
earning both cash for M.D. and a
medal for himself (Jeff gave the
medal to a friend of his in Dublin,
Ga. who had M.D.). Since then, he
competes as often as his job at the
federal prison in Seagoville allows.
Thurman walks daily, just as Jeff
runs daily. Jeff has run in two
marathons this year A few weeks
ago he rode his bicycle in an event
at Wichita Falls for a ride of over
100 miles. Photo contributed^

Many fish that live in the dtep,
dark parts of the ocean have large
eyes and special light organs that
flash on and off There are other
fish that live in mountain streams
with currents so rough that few
other creatures can live in them.
These fish survive because they
have suction organs that enable
them to hold onto rocks in the
stream.

Taxpayers with IRAs: FYI
The JRS Poes NO f Approve IRA Investments
Investors with Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs) should be on
the lookout for ads anil solicitations that claim that certain types of invest-
ments for IRAs are "IRS Approved" or "IRA Approved.” The government
says these ads arc misleading, because the IRS does not approve invest-
ments for IRAs.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, the Securities and Ex-
change Commission and the North American Securities Administrators
Association, investors are gening misleading sales pitches for specific IRA
investments via the telephone, the mail and the Internet. Most solicitations
are variations on this theme:
This investment lias been approved fin your IRA. You can use your IRA
fin this investment by filling out the forms in the attached information pack-
age Our agent will take care of the rest. This has been reviewed by the gov-
ernment (or the IRS}. This investment is so safe you can use it for your IRA
Only certain investments are approved fat IRAs. ”
The agencies say that fraudulent promoters are trying to take advantage
of consumers who may be confused about the role of the IRS when it comes
to IRAs. The IRS issues letters to IRA sponsors, trustees and custodians
certifying that they are complying with requirements concerning investor
rights, account administration, and standards that allow contributions to be
deductible But the IRS does not
• review or approve investments
• advise people on how to invest thnii IRAs.
• endorse any investments, ot
• issue statements that an investment in in IRA is protected because the
IRS has approved a partn ulat nustee ot custodian
