Vandals
Stealing
Bulbs
Last week person or persons
stole a total of 60 bulbs out of
the strings of Christmas lights
around the courthouse lawn, the
equivalent of two boxes. Please
remember that vandalism and/-
or stealing is a criminal offense,
and violators will be prosecuted
to the fullest extent of the law.
These Christmas lights have
long-lasting bulbs that are very
expensive. They were not
bought by the county but were
bought with private donations
by the generous citizens of
Rains County.
We ask that all citizens watch
for vandals, and please report
any suspicious persons or activ-
ity to the Rains County Sher-
iff’s Office. 473-3181.

Lone Star Santas
Help Make Christmas
Brighter for
Rains County Children
It’s hard to be a child and
wonder if you’ll be forgotten
once again this holiday season.
Thanks to Lone Star Santas,
many deserving children in
Emory will remember this
holiday season as an exciting,
happy time.
Lone Star Santas is a non-
profit organization whose goal
is to collect and distribute new
toys through established com-
munity organizations to chil-
dren tlvoughout Texas. Bank of
America Texas is the primary
sponsor of Lone Star Santas.
During the past 13 years,
Lone Star Santas has given
mo e than 326,000 gifts to
children throughout Texas
through more than 300
charitable organizations. The
toys are given to community
organizations serving children
in need such as child abuse
shelters, orphanages, hospitals,
battered women’s shelters and
children’s homes.
The branches of Bank of
America Texas serve as collec-
tion points for the toys. Each
branch of Bank of America
Texas chooses a charity or
charities serving children with-
in their own communities to
receive the toys. New, un-
wrapped toys may be dropped
off at any Bank of America
branch. Toys will be collected
through Christmas Eve.
“This is our 13th year for
helping these kids’ dreams
come true and letting them
know that someone out there
cares about them," said Bank of
America Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer Ron Biagi.
“Even though Lone Star Santas
has been extremely successful,
it’s never enough. There are
always more children who may
receive nothing unless everyone
pitches in. Giving to these kids
teaches you the true meaning of
Christmas.”

Student Council Food Drive
Brings in Over Two Tons!
The RHS Student Council
food drive was a huge success
this year, thanks to a great stu-
dent body and a few incentives!
In the past, our food drive has
been held during the Christmas
holidays to help families in
need, but this year we decided
to do it for Thanksgiving as
well. Dr. Harrison approached
us about hosting a district-wide
drive this year and said if we
could raise 2,600 pounds, we
could earn an early-release day
on Dec. 19th. The class that
brings the most food would also
earn the pizza party that is usu-
ally given for this event.
The Student Council issued the
challenge to grades K-12, and
the race was on!
Students brought food Nov.
13-20, and Dr. Harrison, Coach
Quillian, Jerry Boggs and the
maintenance staff gathered food
from each grade level, weighed
and tallied the food and boxed it
up. When all was said and done,
the students had a grand total of
4,466 pounds of food! Tallies
by grade are as follows: prekin-
dergarten, 85 lbs.; kindergarten,
290 lbs.; first grade, 147 lbs.;
second grade, 453 lbs.; third
grade, 442 lbs.; fifth grade, 555
lbs.; sixth grade, 238 lbs.; sev-
enth grade, 478 lbs.; eighth
grade, 120 lbs.; ninth grade, 238
lbs.; tenth grade, 310 lbs.; elev-
enth grade, 437 lbs.; and twelfth
grade. 286 lbs.
The fifth grade brought in the
most out of all the grades and
won the pizza party. The food
was loaded on a trailer and
taken to the Rains County Good
Samaritans so those in need
could receive it there.
Everyone enjoyed this event,
and we were glad to help Rains
County residents who need the
assistance this year. We hope all
of you had a great Thanksgiv-
ing and are looking forward to a
Merry Christmas.
The Student Council’s next
project is to sponsor a needy
child with an angel from the
angel tree at the First National
Bank of Emory.
