Varsity Lady Cubs Look To
Continue Winning Tradition
ByDawAndohn
CLIFTON — When you think of the varsity
Lady Cub volleyball team, the first thing that
should spring to mind is district champion-
ships. You have to co back a long way to find a
team that did not finish first at the end of the
league season. This year’s team should be no
exception to that tradition.
“Our key this year is going to be the chemis-
try playing well with each other every game.
ltrs definitely coing to be a fun season, said
Head Volleyball Coach Joy Engeldinger
“I’m not sure we’re all real comfortable play-
ing with each other yet, but that chemistry will
come the more games we play.”
The chemistry was definitely of the right mix
Friday, Aug. 23, at the Lady Cubs' home opener
against Lorena as they crushed the Lady Leop-
ards 15-4,15-7.
MI told them in the huddle the other night
against Lorena that when they all decide to
show up and play, they are really scary,” Coach
Engeldinger said with a smile
Of the dozen now on the varsity squad, barely
half suited up at that level in the beginning of
the 2091 season, and two of those, Andrea Har-
mon and Hona Outlaw, were out with injuries
virtually the entire season That leaves Amber
Hoffman, Hali Henderson, Sarah Musselman,
Ashley Amundson, and Molly Sales as the five
with the most varsity-level experience.
However, tack on Sierra Fraley, who played
for Clifton as a sophomore and returns this
year as a senior, and add Amber Ludtke and
Meredith Strickland, and the experience grows.
Then add senior Alex Janss and sophomore
Ashley Wells, and you have an extremely tal-
ented dozen players who can take the court.
Hoffman has been moved back to the left side
after a year on the right, and has responded
well so far.
“She’s so auick she’s really making a big dif-
ference on that side,” said the coach.
Harmon, who missed 2001 with an injury, has
been moved to the middle, what the coach says
is probably the toughest position to learn to
play. “SheTs getting better with each game,”
Coach Engeldinger noted.
Amundson and Strickland are playing strong
back-row defense as well, but the one that al-
most leaves the coach speechless is Hender-
son.

“By the time she’s a senior,” the coach began,
trailing off. “I think she’s really just now get-
ting comfortable with some things, getting con-
fident with what she’s doing.”
“Molly Sales is doing a good job setting up her
teammates, and is becoming a team leader,”
Coach Engeldinger continued
The Lady Cubs headed to Florida last week to
compete in a three-day tourney with teams from
across the nation. Coach Engeldinger said she
doesn’t really know what to expect, but is sure
the competition will be at a high level, perhaps
higher than the Lady Cubs have ever seen be
fore.
“I would not send a team out-of-state some-
where unless I knew they would be able to com
pete, so I think the competition will be pretty
strong for that reason,” she explained.
The coach said she’s eager for the Lady Cubs
