tant of the Year honor in the same division.
The awards were presented at the chapter’s annual
conference last month in San Antonio.
Phillips said he did not know EHA Executive Di-
rector Janice Wingo was going to nominate him for
the award.
“It was kind of a surprise to me. It’s a great honor
to be chosen for it,” Phillips said.
Wingo, in her nomination letter, noted that Phillips
“knows how to do a little bit of everything and can
figure out a creative solution to most any maintenance
problem.”
“He goes out of his way to be friendly and to help
people. He cooks for all the tenant gatherings and is
a superb barbecue chef,” Wingo added.
She also cited his willingness to help others - he
recently assisted two stranded motorists in the same
morning - and his volunteer work at a local summer
day camp.
Phillips said he enjoys working with the housing au-
thority tenants. “The people are a pleasure to work with,”
he said.
Smith, Wingo wrote in the nomination letter for her,
“does a good job dealing with the public, as well as
doing much of the applicant screening, sending letters
to applicants and residents, collecting rent, and much
more.”
Smith also devoted time to the local summer day camp
and volunteers her time to decorate the housing author-
ity office for Halloween and Christmas, Wingo added.
Smith started a crafting group for interested residents
and also works on the housing authority’s parade floats,

Edgewood Housing Authority employees Janice
Smith, left, and Bobby Phillips were both recently
honored with awards from the Texas chapter of
the National Association of Housing and Rede-
velopment Officials (NAHRO).
Wingo stated.
“She sends thank-you cards to residents who assist in
any way, condolences to those who lose loved ones,
and has recently attended several funerals for residents
and relatives of residents,” Wingo wrote.
“It is nice to be appreciated for the extra effort when
you commit to helping the community,” Smith said. “The
residents are well worth the extra effort.”
Van Zandt County Well Represented In Fellowship
Of Christian Athletes Heart Of A Champion Bowl
By David Barber
Sports Correspondent
Van Zandt County will
be well represented in the
upcoming Fellowship of
Christian Athletes (FCA)
Heart of A Champion
Bowl to be played later this
week.
The football game, fea-
turing graduating high
school seniors in East
Texas, will be played Sat-
urday, June 15 at Trinity
Mother Frances Rose Sta-
dium in Tyler beginning at
6:30p.m.
Van Head Football
Coach Jared Moffatt is
one of the two head
coaches for the game and
will be in charge of the
“Red” team.
Harmony Head Coach
Tim Russell has been se-
lected to coach the “Blue”
team.
The selection of the head
coaches was announced
by Robert Bardin, Tyler/
Fongview Area Represen-
tative for the FCA.
“It is an honor to be se-
lected as one of the head
coaches and to be in-
volved with such an out-
standing organization like
the FCA,” emphasized
Moffatt. “It is a privilege
to be able to coach some
of the best players in East
Texas.”
According to Moffatt,
the FCA began the con-
cept of a bowl game for
high school football se-
niors several years ago
with the first game played
in Abilene before moving
to Waco.
The Heart of A Cham-
pion Bowl is being played
in every region in Texas.
This is the third year for
the game to be played in
East Texas. Fast year’s
contest was played in
Fongview.
Players for the FCA
Heart of A Champion
Bowl are first nominated
by their head coaches.
Around 200 seniors from
approximately 50 high
schools in East Texas
were nominated for this
year’s game.
From those nomina-
tions, a player draft was
held in January as each
head coach was allowed
to choose up to 50 players
each to participate in the
contest.
Among the players
drafted included quarter-
back Garrett Smallwood,
defensive tackle Sid Moore
and offensive lineman Jus-
tin Hopkins, all of Van;
wide receiver Micky Mor-
ris of Wills Point and wide
receiver John Corrales of
Grand Saline.
The coaching staffs were
also announced by Bardin.
Moffatt’s coaching staff
will include two of his as-
sistants at Van including
defensive coordinator
Scott Doring and offensive
line coach Sam Harvey.
The remainder of the
“Red” team coaching staff
consists of head coaches
including Mike Alexander
of Mount Pleasant, Brian
Herman of Eustace,
Ricklan Holmes of John
Tyler, Eric Robinson of
Beckville and Gerry
Stanford of White Oak.
T. K. Gorman Head
Coach Coby Gibson will
serve as a consultant for the
“Red” team.
Joining Russell on the
“Blue” team coaching
staff will be head coaches
Craig Barker of Garrison,
Ron Callahan of
Quitman, Mike Hall of
Tyler All Saints, Donald
Hubbard of San August-
ine and Darrell Piske of
Robert E. Fee.
Two of Russell’s assis-
tants at Harmony, Robby
Grandgeorge and Brian
Mauk, will also be on the
“Blue” team coaching
staff.
Findale Head Coach
Mike Meador will serve
as the consultant on the
“Blue” team.
Moffatt served as a
member of Meador’s
coaching staff in last
year’s game.
“All of these coaches
on both staffs do a great
job with their players and
they serve as great role
models for these young
men,” pointed out
Moffatt.
The players and the
coaches for the “Red” and
the “Blue” teams will be
housed in the dormitories
at the University of Texas
in Tyler during the week
prior to the game.
Fike other high school
football games, the score
will be kept for the FCA
Heart of A Champion
Bowl but everybody is a
winner in this game, ac-
cording to Moffatt.
“The FCA Heart of a
Champion Bowl game is
an opportunity for these
players to showcase their
talents on the football field
but more importantly, they
are exposed to the Word of
God through our testimo-
nies and the testimonies of
our guest speakers.”
The coaches and players
will be together not only
for practice sessions but
also during concerts and
special services including
guest speakers that will be
a part of the week’s activi-
ties.
“This is not just a foot-
ball game, it is a Ministry
opportunity,” summarized
Moffatt. “We may have
some players here that
have never been exposed
to hearing about our Ford
and Savior Jesus Christ.
There could be some young
men here that make the de-
cision to rededicate their
fives to the Ford. This will
be a tremendous week and
I am proud to be a part of
what the FCA is doing.”
nology director, for which applications are cur-
rently being accepted.
The board also approved a designation of
$183,000 from the district budget for facility
upgrades. The changes have to do with secu-
rity improvements and will be made by
Gallagher Construction Services during the
summer break.
Also in that meeting, the school board ap-
proved a renewal of the district’s depository
contract with First State Bank of Ben Wheeler.
The board will convene for its regular meet-
ing this month Tuesday.

give them different scenarios to work with.”
The new decorations, Adams said, are “sugar
on the cake” of a new family-oriented program
calendar this summer.
“We are going to have movie nights and we
have an ‘Aloha Day’ coming up...you may see
a hula dance contests one day or a hula hoop
contest, and we also have some inflatable surf-
boards to use for a surfing contest.
“We are really trying to up the ante a little bit
and trying to make it fun for everyone,” Adams
said.
The surfing culture theme of the decorations
and special events tie into a season-long theme
of “Surf’s Up” developed by John Steger,
president of the pool’s operating board now
known as THE POOF at Grand Saline.
Originally started by Terry and Celeste Tolar
of Grand Saline as a non-profit entity called
Save The Pool Inc., the board did a lot of work
after the end of last season to raise the facility’s
public profile, Steger explained.
“We went back to the city after last season,
and presented some things and worked on a
budget together with the city, with the help of
Gene Putnam, who is a certified pool facility
manager,” Steger said.
Putnam is also the director of public works
for the city of Grand Saline. The pool board
and the city have a cooperative agreement in
place regarding expenses and management.
Steger said enough money was secured this
year to bring the restroom facilities at the pool
up to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
standards, and an ADA-compliant pool lift was
installed as well.
Steger and fellow board members Fynn
Alexander, Celia Hansell and Helen Thomp-
son also met with Grand Saline ISD Superin-
tendent Trish Elliott to secure plywood for ad-
vertisements on the facility fencing and the
surfboard cutouts.
The pool hours of operation are one of the
biggest changes returning patrons will notice.
Instead of the split-session format of years past,
the pool is now open 4-9 p.m. on Mondays, 1-
5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2-6
p.m. on Sundays.
Admission is $3 for each person, with chil-
dren under the age of two admitted at no
charge.
Steger noted that the pool remains available
for private party rentals as well.
“We do pool parties in the evenings, which
brings in money and accommodates both busi-
nesses wanting to host a party for their employ-
ees as well as families or groups wanting to host
a party. We have even had wedding receptions
by the pool,” Steger said.
The board has also brought in a certified
swimming instructor from Tyler Junior College
to offer swimming lessons.
The pool opened on Memorial Day weekend
to a big and eager crowd, Steger said.
“Our first Monday night was loaded with
people. They were lined up at the gate waiting to
come in,” he said.
